As we continue our International Women's Day celebrations, we turn our focus to a true trailblazer in the women's game—Holly Phillips. A powerhouse for Bristol Bears and a proud international for Canada, Holly has navigated the challenges of elite rugby while juggling a full-time job, proving that passion and resilience can push boundaries in a sport still fighting for full professional status.

A Passion for Rugby, A Journey of Dedication

"I’ve always had a passion for sports, but rugby really stood out to me because of its blend of strength, strategy, and teamwork," Holly reflects.

Her introduction to the game came as a teenager at a local club, where she immediately connected with the sport’s sense of community. What started as an outlet for her competitive energy quickly became a lifelong passion.

"Rugby became more than just a sport for me—it gave me friendships, a support system, and the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself."

From those early days, Holly dedicated herself to developing her skills, attending regional training sessions and progressing through higher levels of the game. It was a journey that demanded hard work, sacrifices, and unwavering support from those around her.

"The road hasn’t been easy—it required immense effort and perseverance. Each step up the ladder, from grassroots to the premiership and international rugby, pushed me further."

Despite reaching elite-level rugby, Holly acknowledges that the women’s game still has a long way to go in achieving full professional status.

"In my experience, the game isn't yet fully professional. We’ve made strides in the right direction, but I have yet to experience rugby at the level of a fully professional athlete. Still, looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come."

The Evolution of Women’s Rugby

Having played at an elite level for years, Holly has witnessed first-hand the transformation of the women's game.

"There’s definitely been a significant shift in the visibility and recognition of women’s rugby. When I started, there was far less media coverage, and the infrastructure wasn’t as strong as it is now."

With professional leagues emerging, increased investment in women’s teams, and more opportunities for players to compete at higher levels, progress has been undeniable. However, Holly believes that more needs to be done.

"We need continued investment in grassroots development, better access to facilities, and greater recognition for female players. The push for a fully professional league and increased sponsorship opportunities is crucial because we’re still behind the men’s game in many areas."

The Challenges of a Female Rugby Player

Despite playing at the top level, Holly's experience has been far from easy. One of the biggest hurdles? Balancing elite rugby with a full-time job.

"The pathway for female athletes is incredibly tough. We’re expected to perform at the same high level as men, but many of us have to juggle jobs and financial struggles because we’re not paid to play."

Competing against fully contracted athletes while trying to make ends meet has pushed Holly to her limits.

"There were many times when I had to work before and after training, leaving me physically and mentally drained. My rest days weren’t really rest days—I was trying to earn extra income while still striving to perform at the highest level."

Beyond financial struggles, Holly has also faced societal pressures and body image challenges.

"Rugby requires me to be bigger and stronger, but as a woman, there’s always this external pressure to conform to social standards of femininity. Balancing the need for strength in my sport with these expectations has been difficult."

Despite these obstacles, Holly’s passion for rugby and unwavering determination have kept her moving forward.

"It’s been a tough journey, but the challenges have built my resilience. The struggles are real, but so is the love I have for this game."

Advice for Young Players

For girls looking to get into rugby, Holly has a simple yet powerful message: just get involved.

"Rugby is such a supportive community, and there’s space for everyone—whether you want to play, coach, or volunteer. Don’t worry about whether you’re big enough or strong enough—the sport is all about teamwork, skill, and determination."

She encourages young players to seek out mentors and role models, people who can guide them through the sport and help them grow. Most importantly, she urges them to enjoy the game.

"If you’re passionate about it, stick with it, and don’t let anyone tell you it’s not for you. And most importantly—have fun!"

The Role of Community Clubs in Growing the Women’s Game

While Holly plays at the highest level, she understands that grassroots rugby is the foundation of the sport.

"Community clubs are absolutely essential. Without them, we wouldn’t have the pipeline of talent needed to elevate women’s rugby to the professional stage."

For Holly, clubs like Bristol Harlequins play a vital role in developing young female players and providing them with opportunities to grow in the game.

"It’s at the community level where players build confidence, learn the values of teamwork, and experience the joy of rugby. Investing in these clubs is key to building the future of women’s rugby."

Pushing Women’s Rugby Forward

Holly’s journey is a testament to the resilience, sacrifice, and dedication required to succeed in women’s rugby today. As the sport continues to grow, she remains hopeful that the next generation will have more opportunities, better financial support, and a clearer pathway to professionalism.

For now, she continues to inspire, compete, and advocate for change—on the pitch for Bristol Bears and Canada, and off the pitch as a role model for the future of the game.

A huge thank you to Holly for taking the time to sit down and help us celebrate International Women's Day!
